Hello Denali Families!

As middle schoolers grow, they naturally seek more independence and much of that exploration now happens online. While technology keeps our students connected, navigating the digital world can sometimes feel overwhelming for both students and parents.

Recently in our counseling lessons, we’ve been talking about the importance of "digital wellness" finding a healthy balance between screen time, schoolwork, sleep, and face-to-face relationships.

To support your child at home, here are three quick, counselor-approved tips for fostering healthy tech habits:

1. Establish "Tech-Free" Zones & Times

The single biggest disrupter of middle school sleep is a phone buzzing late at night. Consider establishing a rule where all devices (phones, tablets, gaming systems) are plugged into a central charging station in the kitchen or living room by a specific time each night (e.g., 8:30 PM).

2. Use the "Front Page" Rule

Remind your student that nothing online is truly private. A good rule of thumb to teach them is: "If you wouldn't want this text, photo, or comment printed on the front page of the town newspaper for your family and teachers to see, don't send or post it."

3. Encourage Offline "Brain Breaks"

Middle school brains are rapidly developing and need a break from constant dopamine hits. Encourage your child to spend at least 30 minutes a day doing something completely offline like playing a sport, reading, cooking, or just hanging out outside.

Let’s Partner Up! An easy conversation starter for dinner tonight: “What is your favorite thing to do online right now, and what is one thing that bugs you about social media/group chats?”
